Celebrating Self-Employment

“Behind every small business, there's a story worth knowing. All the corner shops in our towns and cities, the restaurants, cleaners, gyms, hair salons, hardware stores –
these didn't come out of nowhere.” ~ Paul Ryan

In honour of Small Business Week in Alberta, this month’s newsletter is dedicated to all the small businesses, self-employed individuals, and entrepreneurs that I admire and respect immensely.

According to the Government of Alberta, small businesses (defined as employing less than 50 people) make up 96 per cent of all Alberta’s businesses and micro-businesses (those employing between one and four people) make up nearly two-thirds of Alberta’s small businesses. Small businesses provide valuable products and services to individuals and organizations and contribute significantly to the well-being of the communities they operate in. They function in and out of the public eye providing paid and volunteer employment opportunities, supporting community initiatives and causes, sponsoring teams, investing in projects, and supplying goods and services.

I appreciate the small businesses that serve me, my family, and my business from the person who designs my newsletters and updates my website, to my accountant, the people who put my winter tires on my car (and take them off again), my hairdresser, and my favorite local vegetable supplier – THANK YOU for all that you do!

"It is literally true that you can succeed best and quickest by helping others to succeed." ~ Napoleon Hill

Through my involvement with my professional association, and because of the business I am in, I have had the privilege of working alongside a number of small business owners who provide professional services to both individuals and organizations. Allow me to introduce you to Robert Manolson, Creator and Facilitator of Powerful Play Experiences. Robert delivers workplace fun and wellness workshops with authenticity and exuberance, raising fun levels at team building sessions, staff retreats, conferences, and seminars. He has delivered Powerful Play workshops across Alberta and receives glowing reviews no matter who his audience is.

Robert and I have recently brought out areas of expertise together to develop a collaborative team building workshop called There Is An “I” In Team: Me Building Is Team Building. These workshops combine the best of personality theory and play at work to offer your team a highly interactive and insightful team building experience. If you are in the market for a unique team building experience Robert would be delighted to chat with you about your organization’s specific needs. Visit his website, www.powerfulplay.ca, for more information about Robert and his business and check out his workshop brochure, http://www.powerfulplay.ca/2012Brochure.pdf, to see how Powerful Play can enhance your team’s success.

The best way you can celebrate small businesses in your community is to support them.
